If you’ve landed on this page, odds are that you’ve already taken Modafinil and, either after a long day’s work or for the long night ahead, plan on mixing Modafinil and alcohol.
While generally thought to be a bad idea, people are going to do it anyhow.
Staying informed will at least grant you the knowledge behind the reasons why this is bad for you, which might deter you from making a habit out of it.
If you’re not yet familiar with Modafinil, I’ve written a Modalert review where I talk about my Modafinil experience.
GABA – inhibitory neurotransmitter that regulates anxiety, sedation and other functions
Glutamate – excitatory neurotransmitter responsible for learning and memory
Alcohol does the opposite. It inhibits glutamate and activates GABA, increasing its production significantly while leaving other excitatory neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, glutamate or epinephrine at the same levels.
This explains the mood swings experienced on alcohol and often amplified by the combination of Modafinil.
We’ve all had that day after a night’s drinking. That “special” day when you hardly feel like doing anything and waiting for the day to pass seems like the only option.
Modafinil will “refresh” your mind and have you ready to have a fun and productive day. Just remember to drink lots of water.
The prospect of drinking more without getting drunk is highly appealing, especially to younger users.
The risk of blacking out basically disappears and you won’t become “stupid-drunk”.
Many will view this as a downside, due to the increased intoxication that comes with ingesting large amounts of alcohol,
Getting drunk while on Modafinil is very difficult. You would be hard-pressed to drink so much. If you do, you’ll be in for a hell of a morning the next day, especially if you’ve been neglecting your water intake.
The mental clarity that comes with using Modafinil will make it hard to assess your current state of mind.
When you drink a lot while on Modafinil, your mind will be sober and your body will be drunk, which is an odd feeling to have.
Also, the effects of Modafinil might be wearing off while your alcohol intake isn’t decreasing, which might result in a hard crash.
Some users might take Modafinil right after going out at night to make sure that they can party all night long.
This is a bad idea because the partying might stop, the drunkenness would still be there, but the body would be too worn out, which could result in a state of extreme discomfort.
Although Modafinil and alcohol aren’t best buddies when it comes to their way of affecting your transmitters, both of them cause dehydration.
It’s best to drink a lot more water than you would if taken separately.
Proper hydration will make the difference between feeling slightly hungover and a massive headache the next morning.
It’s easy to forget to eat when on Modafinil, given the fact that it’s very efficient at suppressing appetite.
Although there are many that would say that fasting improves brain activity, doing this wouldn’t be a good idea when on Modafinil, which is known to make you irritable and anxious.
In a similar way to Adderall, taking Modafinil on an empty stomach makes you feel nauseous. Adding alcohol will only make you feel worse.
Side note: Many Adderall users prefer switching from Modafinil to Adderall. Check out my Modafinil vs Adderall comparison.
No doctor has ever recommended this combination and there are sufficient reasons why.
It does have its perks when taken after a night out drinking. You will make use of an otherwise unproductive day.
Forget about alcohol. Modafinil is a great smart drug that can do a lot of good in your life.
