Kratom Tea: Effects, Benefits, Preparation and Risks

kratom tea effects

Kratom (or Mytragina Speciosa) is a versatile herb capable of creating a wide range of effects, from stimulation and focus to pain relief and sedation.

Kratom tea is quite famous in Southeast Asia. It’s one of the most popular ways of ingesting Kratom, though it does come with both advantages and disadvantages.

This article aims to clarify everything you need to know about the benefits, effects, preparation techniques and risks of Kratom tea.

What is Kratom Tea?

Kratom tea is the drink-of-choice for many and quite a lot of people have replaced coffee with Kratom tea.

What’s interesting is that many have also replaced synthetic sleep aids and painkillers with Kratom too.

It’s a healthy alternative to many medications, capable of generating a plethora of effects.

Effects of Kratom Tea

Why do people drink kratom tea? It’s because of its rapid onset due to the potent alkaloids being released much faster than if you would chew Kratom.

There’s a lot of discussion regarding the potency of Kratom tea.

Many people who review Kratom claim that the alkaloids that give Kratom its effects are destroyed because of high temperatures.

That’s false.

Kratom tea doesn’t lose any potency whatsoever. The effects are simply altered.

The stimulating and mood-boosting aspect of Kratom is increased while the pain relief effect is decreased.

Kratom Tea Benefits

Mentally and physically stimulating – Low doses of Kratom produce stimulating effects, which is why so many people are replacing their morning coffee with Kratom tea.

Gastrointestinal relief – Kratom tea is great for preventing constipation and easing abdominal cramps. It promotes proper digestion and boosts metabolism.

Mood booster – Kratom tea helps the body release endorphins and activates the opiate receptors in the brain, which is why so many opiate addicts use Kratom to get off heroin or morphine. High doses of Kratom create effects which are very similar to other opiates. The minimal side-effects and low addictive potential make Kratom a better choice for fighting opiate addiction than other pharmaceutical opiates.

Effective in relieving pain – Even though you won’t get the same pain-relieving benefits from Kratom tea as you would from other oral methods of ingestion, it’s still effective in lowering the pain and discomfort caused by headaches, stomach cramps and flu symptoms.

Makes your skin darker – Regular Kratom use leads to improved blood circulation which makes the skin look darker and fresher. Kratom tea helps balance pH levels, which also helps the skin heal faster following sunburn or dehydration.

How to make Kratom tea?

how to make kratom tea

Drinking Kratom tea is one of the most common forms of taking Kratom.

What makes Kratom tea better than chewing leaves is the fact that you get to filter the “good stuff” of Kratom, making it less acidic and toxic.

There are two ways you can make Kratom tea: using whole dried leaves or powder.

The traditional way involves boiling the desired dose of Kratom leaves in water for 20 minutes and using a strainer to filter out the leaves.

You can also use Kratom powder and leave it for 10 minutes in boiling water to make Kratom tea which is more potent.

You’ll have to make Kratom tea a few times before you get the dosage right to achieve the desired taste and potency.

The darker the tea is, the more intense the flavor.

What you need to make Kratom tea

A kettle

Water

A strainer

Kratom powder/leaves

Instructions

Fill a kettle with water according to how many cups you’re going to serve

Heat up the water until it reaches boiling point and add the right amount of Kratom

Let the kettle simmer for ten to fifteen minutes and shut it off when the tea turns yellow

Pour the contents in cups using a strainer to filter the powder of leaves

Throw away the residue and enjoy the tea with a friend

Kratom is known to have a bitter taste which might not appeal to everyone. You can add honey, sugar or cinammon to make it sweeter.

If you want to serve it cold, put some ice in the cup after you’ve poured.

To protect the alkaloids within the tea, slice a lime or a lemon in half and add it in the kettle before boiling.

This will prevent the destruction of the Kratom alkaloids due to boiling temperatures.

You can also add certain compounds which potentiate the brew in different ways.

Adding caffeine or agmatine sulfate will increase the stimulating effects of Kratom tea.

Certain herbs such as valerian root or chamomile accentuate the relaxing effects of Kratom.

Grapefruit juice or turmeric are also great additions because they prolong the effects of the brew.

Kratom dosage for the right type of tea

Choosing the right amount of Kratom to use in your tea largely depends on the desired effect, your own body weight, metabolism and current tolerance. If it’s the first time you’re using Kratom, you should definitely start with the lowest dose and work your way up from there.

Here are the suggested doses to use for Kratom tea:

Threshold dose (1.5g – 3g) – This is how much you should drink if you’re a beginner and unsure of how you would react. This amount will typically produce subtle stimulation and increased focus.

Low (3g – 4g) – Your mental state slightly shifts and you experience increased stimulation and mild euphoria.

Moderate (4g – 5g) – This is where the stimulation is less apparent and the relaxing effects are more prominent. Even more so if you’re using Red strains or something similar that is known to be more sedating.

High (6g – 10g) – This much will make you feel sedated and euphoric. This is the typical dose for someone taking Kratom for pain relief, improved sleep or to alleviate opiate withdrawal symptoms.

How long does Kratom tea take to kick in?

Kratom tea takes a considerably less amount of time to kick in. Users report feeling the effects after 15 minutes.

When being chewed or swallowed directly, Kratom usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes to kick in because it takes longer to digest leaves or powder.

Risks of Kratom tea

Drinking Kratom tea for a long period of time might significantly reduce appetite and lead to anorexia. Also, prolonged use of Kratom tea may lead to addiction.

Mixing Kratom with other psychoactive substances may be dangerous, particularly other depressants such as alcohol or opiates.

Risks regarding Kratom use are highly exaggerated, especially among people or organizations that only see the dangers of Kratom abuse.

Yes, it can produce drug-like effects and it can even lead to death if consumed in huge doses. But that goes with just about any other substance. If you overdo it, bad things are going to happen. Even food eaten in excess isn’t something you want to do, so those “increasing reports about Kratom poisoning” cannot be used as an argument to condemn its health benefits and opiate withdrawal relief for which it is mostly used.

Which Kratom to choose for Tea?

Basically, any type of Kratom will do, though you must make sure that you’re using quality Kratom from reliable vendors.

Still, as I’ve stated many times in my blog posts, not all Kratom strains are created equally.

Depending on your mood or the time of the day, you should make sure that you’re using the right type of Kratom to avoid uncomfortable situations.

For a relaxing effect, most people seem to favor Red strains, particularly Red Bali Kratom, as it is known to be one of the most potent sedating strains of Kratom available today.

If you’re looking to replace that morning cup-of-joe and drink something that will stimulate your senses and help you stay focused, then White Vein strains or Maeng Da Kratom will get the job done.

Still, you’ll need to be careful about dosage. Even the most stimulating Kratom strain will produce sedating effects when exaggerating doses.
